What Working With an Interior Designer Actually Looks Like: A Step-by-Step Guide From Holland House

Hiring an interior designer can feel overwhelming if you’ve never gone through the process before. What happens first? How involved do you need to be? How long does everything take?

At Holland House, we want the experience to feel simple, clear, and enjoyable from beginning to end. Whether you need full-service interior design, floor plan development, material and finish selections, or furniture sourcing and installation, we tailor our process to your needs.

This guide walks you through what working with an interior designer actually looks like — step by step — so you know exactly what to expect.

Check out our portfolio and photo galleries.

1. A Free In-Person Consultation

We always begin with a face-to-face meeting. This is where we talk through your wants and needs, the style you’re drawn to, and what isn’t currently working in your space.

This first consultation is free because it’s just as much about you getting to know us as it is about us understanding your project. You should walk away knowing whether Holland House feels like the right fit — and we want to feel the same way.

2. You Choose Your Level of Involvement

After that first meeting, you’ll decide exactly what services you want from us and what materials or selections you’d like us to help with. Options range from:

  • full-service design from floor plan to completion

  • material and finish selections (flooring, tile, cabinetry, fixtures)

  • furniture ordering and placement

  • or a mix of everything

Once everything is clear, we sign a contract outlining the scope of work, responsibilities, and fees so everyone knows what to expect moving forward.

Keywords included: interior design services, full-service interior design, design contract

3. A Home Tour (For Renovations)

For renovation projects, we schedule a walk-through of your home. We look at the layout, the natural light, the architecture, and the flow between rooms so we understand the starting point and the potential.

For new builds, we skip this step and move straight into planning.

Keywords included: home renovation design, remodel designer, new build interior design

4. Floor Plans + Inspiration Development

This is where the creative process begins. Using everything you shared during your consultation, we start working on your floor plan and gathering inspiration for materials and finishes.

We create a mood board for each room in your project so you can clearly see the direction your home is heading. Our goal is to translate your dreams and ideas into something visual, intentional, and unique.

Keywords included: floor plan design, interior design mood boards, design inspiration

5. Review Meeting: Floor Plans + Mood Boards

Next, we meet again — either in your home or at our studio — to walk through your mood boards and floor plan drafts.

We go space by space, talking through what you love, what doesn’t feel quite right, and what needs adjusting. This is one of our favorite steps because it’s where your project starts to really take shape.

We pride ourselves on listening deeply and understanding each client’s goals from the very beginning. We are not a cookie-cutter design firm. We’re here to bring your vision to life.

6. Revisions + Expert Guidance

After reviewing everything together, we make adjustments based on your feedback. We’ll offer professional guidance if we think something could be improved or simplified, but ultimately the decisions are yours.

At this stage, we also recommend contractors or other specialists if the project requires it. Holland House offers flooring installation, trim work, and painting, so we can take care of many elements in-house.

Keywords included: design revisions, contractor recommendations, flooring installation

7. Finalizing the Plans + Diving Into Materials

We can repeat the revision process until it feels perfect — there’s no limit on getting it right.

Once the floor plan is set, we move into materials and furnishings:

We believe all of these elements should be considered together from the start so the final design feels cohesive.

We order samples so you can see and touch everything — color, texture, quality — and we price items so you have a clear idea of the projected investment. Budget transparency is extremely important to us, and we work hard to avoid surprises.

Keywords included: material selections, home finishes, interior design samples, budget-friendly design

8. Selection Meeting

We meet again in person to review all the materials side-by-side. If there’s anything you don’t love, we adjust and reorder until it feels right.

Our goal isn’t for you to “like” your choices — we want you to love them.

9. Ordering + Delivery

Once every choice is finalized, we place all orders. We require payment upfront for materials, and as shipments arrive, we manage everything. We receive, check, and deliver your items directly to you so nothing gets lost in the shuffle.

10. Installation + The Fun Part

Our team handles installation for everything you’ve contracted us to manage. We’re detail-oriented and efficient, and we treat your home as if it were our own.

If you’ve ordered furniture, we place it once the home is ready. If you’ve asked us to decorate or style your space, we save that for the grand finale. This is the step where everything comes together and feels magical.

Keywords included: interior design installation, furniture placement, home styling

11. Your Home, Completed

When the dust settles and the final touches are placed, your home is complete — and it should feel like a breath of fresh air.

We love being part of that transformation. And we love knowing you walk into a home that reflects your style, your lifestyle, and the little details that matter most to you.

Keywords included: finished interior design project, home reveal, completed design
